![]() The flip side is that it takes a long while before you unlock all the potential of the battle system.1) the unity engine is bad for asset streaming. The game doesn't get in to Chain Attacks (a bunch of free Blade Arts hits from using 3 pips of the party gauge) until well 20-30 hours in to the game!Īustin Walker explained it generously describing it as a college course where you learn one thing, practice it for a long while, and then you learn a new thing that builds on it. Also a bad point, the early goings are slow and only expect you to learn one new trick to get used to for a few hours. Basically, if you aren't cancelling animations, pulling off Driver combos (Break -> Topple -> Launch -> Smash), and chaining supers (Blade Arts in to Blade combos), you aren't being efficient. It's the bad part of the poorly tutorialized and explained combat system is that this is the most active and combo heavy battle system Monolith Soft has made for Xenoblade. The enemies seem to be incredible damage sponges. The thing I dislike the most is the combat. And when I do have to pay attention to cutscenes and stuff that has been great as well. It's a great "put on with something else going on in the second screen and do sidequests/run around the world" type game. ![]() I'm about 20 hours in but so far I would definitely put it in my top 5 games of the year (which I realized yesterday was almost entirely Japanese games like P5 and Nier, which is wild) so far. I think Austin said something like "it's a 7.5 but a 7.5 can be great" and I think I agree with that. I think it has a major lack of polish and a ton of issues (voice acting uneven despite the fact I like it, the map sucks, you can't go back and look at tutorials so I end up taking screenshots every time a t utorial pops up or resorting to google, the fetch quests are too RNG in terms of gathering poitns, etc.), but the world design and story (so far at least) and combat are enough to keep me hooked. I've dropped all of it for this game, 20 hours in, despite all its flaws. Saw the "end" of Odyssey and got 5-10 hours in both Mario+Rabbids and BotW. I'm not mad about it it's just tired of it, and I speak as someone who did parrot that joke back in 2010 or whateverĪlso RE: the lip synching, it's not even that it's tuned to the Japanese, I don't think it's tuned at all, there are some cutscenes where the mouth flaps well after the characters stop speaking, pretty sure they just said "this line will take around 2.7 seconds to go, have the mouth animate for that long"Īs for my overall impressions, I got a switch right before black friday. This is a pretty good representation of what is bad about Anime.Īnime Is For Jerks was a good goof 8 years ago that the community has latched on to and just repeats as if the same punchline will stay funny for that amount of time. Also that demo for Lost Sphear, from the guys who made I am Setsuna, is out. The combat looks bland and boring, but I also really liked playing FFXII earlier this year so maybe I'll enjoy it and/or have either of you guys played the demo of Project Octopath Traveler? I finished that and I think it could be the kind of JRPG you guys were talking about wanting for a bit in this QL. I had already given up on buying this game before the Quick Look, but Brad and Ben being positive on a JRPG kinda makes me want to give this a shot. ![]() And at least portions of Rex's design match up with what he does for a living - basically, gathering resources in dangerous and hard-to-reach places. Character designs in general look dumb, but it's JRPG dumb and I don't really mind that. But when you're running around town or in the middle of combat, wearing a thong with see-through underwear is both incredibly impractical and looks extremely uncomfortable. Sexy is great when it's sexy time (aside: I don't think any of this is sexy, but to each their own!). When Brad gets into gameplay, Pyra's wearing something that could reasonably called clothes, but it seems to disappear when she goes into battle or into a cutscene. Yeah, I wish I could give Pyra a pair of pants or something :(. If they would give me an option to cut out the fanservice, I would buy this game in a heartbeat.
